If you have a personal relationship with God then you know he has a way of speaking to you and answering your requests. Sometimes it’s straightforward, other times it’s through people or things.
For a couple of weeks I had been studying the characters of Moses, Nehemiah and even Jesus. See, I felt I was at the end of what I knew to do alone and I needed help! So I told God about it. Again, and again, and again. Did I say, again?
If you’re like me, then God has given you an assignment, a mandate, a vision that he expects you to deliver. As you walk out your assignment, your purpose, you question yourself. You ponder if you will ever complete and do what is required of you and how!
You end up bogged done with the day-to-day activities, the back-end administrative type work you come to dislike. The type of activities that keep you working in the assignment but not working the assignment; there is a difference.
When God called Moses and gave him the assignment of bringing his chosen people out of Egypt to the land He promised them Moses first thought was “Not me, Lord. Send someone else!”
As Moses stayed under the leadership and guidance of God he learned how to be the leader God had already pre-ordained him to be. But there is a lesson we can learn from Moses.
Moses assumed that the total responsibility of teaching, guiding and governing the Israelites fell on him. And so it is with many of us.
There are many that God has given an assignment or vision to and you’ve endeavored to carry it out. You’ve persevered, been obedient and stayed true to God’s instructions.
But at times the load is too heavy to bear. Sometimes you feel that since God called you, you have to do everything and be responsible for everything. You can’t.
Just as Moses listened and heeded wise counsel from his father-in-law, let us heed wise council from his story (Exodus 18:18).
Talk to God and tell him you can’t do it alone. The vision or assignment he has assigned to you is too heavy to carry alone. Ask him to send individuals to assist you – just as Moses did (Numbers 11:14). It’s not that you are weak. It just means that you recognize when you need help. Sometimes God is just waiting for us to ask for help.
As you seek out specific individuals ask God to place the same anointing He has on your life on those individuals so His vision which is your vision will become their vision (Numbers 11:16-17). Ask that they will be loyal and committed and love the Lord with their whole heart. That they are clean from within the heart – because we all know that what comes out of a man is what defiles him (Matthew 15:11 & 18). That they will desire to use their gifts and talents to glorify him by being used through your organization.
IN DEPTH EXAMPLES
- Moses developed an assembly of people to a mighty nation with rules and laws. A nation that could say God has brought them from a mighty long way. He could not have done it without the 70 elders he appointed at the beginning. He was their leader, but they were his arms. As he equipped them to carry out what God gave him to give to the people, Moses was freed up to do what He really needed to do – sit before God and hear his instructions.
- Nehemiah had a zest and zeal to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem and God favored him to do so. But he literally could not do it by himself he needed help. He had to have the participation of the remnant that remained in Jerusalem after Nebuchadnezzar destroyed the city. He was the leader but the people were his arms.
- Jesus came to do the will of his father, God but he knew that in order for what he started to continue he would need helpers, hence the disciples. He was their leader and while on earth he taught them what they needed to know. When he left he continued their help by sending the Holy Spirit to be that guide – to us all. His disciples, then and now, continue where he left off: spreading the good news, the gospel, to the four corners of the world and serving those in need.
You are the visionary and your job is to make sure you hear from God, follow his commands and encourage, teach and guide others into completing His task, in and over their lives.
With help you have more time to spend in God’s presence. With help you have more time to do what you are graced to do (write, teach, study, prepare sermons, sit and listen to God speak to you, sing, meditate, paint, organize, etc.), to glorify God.
HERE ARE SOME SIMPLE STEPS TO GET YOU STARTED:
- Go to God and lay your request before Him (as Moses did).
- Make a list of things you are doing that others can do.
- Determine who and what skill sets are needed.
- Ask God for discernment, wisdom, guidance and patience as you start your search and start building your team.
- Don’t forget to ask for the help. When you do your part, God will do His.
Never give up on what God has already pre-ordained for you. Stand tall, stand strong. Persevere, be patient. Be kind and bless others. Pour into others and others will eventually pour into you.
Sometimes the way seems cloudy and the assignments seem too large, but just know that if God called you for it then he has already placed within you everything you need to get the job done. You are already anointed for it.
Believe in yourself. Trust God and remember, you don’t have to do it alone.
